John Chappell is a recently retired ceramic tile contractor, who has been living and working on the Monterey Peninsula for the last 40 years, also giving clay classes. In between tile jobs, he has always kept busy in his home-studio throwing pots and creating sculptures, working primarily with clay. From now on, Chappell will devote himself full-time to his art. He has a retrospective exhibit at the Sylvan Gallery, 613 Ortiz Ave., Sand City, titled Fertility. His affinity for natural materials is apparent in all his works. His experience and experimentation culminated in the production of tables, lamps, fountains and ceramic creations. Most recently Chappell has been designing jewelry incorporating fossils and semi-precious stones. The gallery is open on weekends  – Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14, as well as Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21.
