• Bob Fitch was a photographer for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during the 1960s, and one of the people who chronicled the Civil Rights Movement. He photographed Martin Luther King, Jr., Dorothy Day of the Catholic Workers Movement, Cesar Chavez of the United Farm Workers movement. According to the New York Times, he was granted access into the inner workings of the black-led civil rights organization because it was a job too dangerous for a black person; Fitch was white. He died last week at his home in Watsonville. Banners of his work are on display at Tanimura & Antle Library at CSU Monterey Bay.
  • Monterey Museum of Art-Pacific hosts the 2016 Weston Scholarship exhibition in their new Community Gallery, a showcase for work by local community members and organizations. This one, the scholarship, is driven by the desire of Kim and Gina Weston to keep alive the fine art black-and-white photography legacy founded by Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and their peers. This show consists of work by Monterey County students who are continuing in the footsteps of analogue photography created in darkrooms.   • The Pacific Grove Art Center has been buffeted by rent hikes that have threatened to shutter its doors or force relocation. But the center is not stopping its creative programming. They’re starting up an open mic talent night 7-10:30pm Fridays starting May 13 (it’s Friday the 13th, but don’t let that scare you) and extending through June 24 – June 3 being an exception. They’ll provide two mics, two instrument cables and a house system.   • Truth, Wisdom and the American Way present a town hall meeting 5:30-9pm Monday at Crazy Horse Restaurant with speaker Brendan P. Kelly, Ph.D., executive director of Study of Environmental Arctic Change, International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and a Senior Fellow at the Center for the Blue Economy at Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. His talk is about global warming and what is happening to ice masses at the North and South Poles. Maybe you’ve heard it all before, or you’re a climate change skeptic.
