- Painter and writer Susan Collins, aka Suzka, has published a book called Wonders in Dementialand, which she describes as a juxtaposition of the “seriousness of dementia with the hilarity of life’s unpredictability,” the past and the present, delusion and imagination. It’s available on Amazon.com.
- Richard Wheat, a physician, former Navy medical officer and wine aficionado, has written a book called Blood Red Vines. It’s about a physician and Navy officer veteran who seeks to reconstitute his war-torn psyche by making wine with the daughter of a wise French winemaker. - Our newest man about town Ivan Garcia was one of the dedicated few who braved a lot of change-ups to get to last month’s Central Coast Chamber/Chamber Battles rap battle, which moved from Ocean Grown in Marina to Planet Gemini in Monterey. It caught fire, Garcia says, when Miggi from Marina got on the mic with lines like this: “All these whack rappers and shit got me feeling like Colin Kaepernick when the national anthem hits, I ain’t gonna stand for it!”
- Twenty-two Monterey County teens ages 13-18 submitted photos for the Harrison Memorial Library’s teen photo contest. Tian Shi of Stevenson High School won the Judge’s Choice award for his black-and-white of Tor House as spied between trees. Dan Zeng of Santa Catalina won the People’s Choice award for her whimsical color photo of a car parked in front of a bakery. 624-7323.
- Looking into the future of 2017, the Carmel Bach Festival has already announced part of Conductor Paul Goodwin’s programming for their summer music concerts. For opening night you can expect to hear Bach’s Ascension Oratorio and selections from Handel’s Messiah. As a grand finale, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Ode to Joy. This is big music.
