A vibrant bouquet encased in ice catches your eye when the Elderflower G&T arrives at the table.
“They’re always asking, ‘What is that?’” says Pedro Arango, a bartender at Alvarado Street Brewery & Bistro in Carmel Plaza. “A garnish is always one of the most important parts of the drinks,” he adds – although this is something different.
The trio of marigolds are the first clue as to what the drink is about. Fundamentally, it’s a gin and tonic. But it’s also a refreshing, floral beverage that takes people back to spring with every sip.
The gin and tonic is made with Nolet’s Silver Gin, a floral, fruity spirit; elderflower syrup, which adds a sweet, delicate touch; and Top Hat tonic, with a subtle bitter bite. “It’s a really well-balanced drink,” Arango says. It’s one of the most popular cocktails at the award-winning brewery.
It’s such a hit, in fact, that the decorative cubes sell out. Arango warns that if you order the cocktail later in the day, you might not get the ice centerpiece. “I just made the ice this morning, and we’re halfway through with it already,” he observes, early on a Monday afternoon. “And we’re still open for another six-and-a-half hours.”
Alvarado Street has three locations, but the G&T is available only in Carmel. Arango recommends pairing it with the scallop ceviche, which has bright, acidic flavors and brings out the drink’s crisp, refreshing tones.
