Great Britain and Ireland dominated morning foursome play. The U.S. swamped GB&I in afternoon singles. And once the Saturday Walker Cup Match fray was over at Cypress Point, it was back to square one.
The score is 5.5 each heading into Sunday’s final, with GB&I looking to break a losing streak dating back to 2015.
Connor Graham and Tyler Weaver set the tone of morning play. The duo won three of the last four holes to top the world’s leading amateur, Jackson Koivun and his playing partner Tommy Morrison 3 and 1. Meanwhile, GB&I’s Charlie Forster and Luke Pouler took Stewart Hagestad and Ben James 3 and 2.
In a tight battle, Eliot Baker and Stuart Grehan edged the U.S. side of Ethan Fang and Preston Stout 1 up. The only bright spot for the Americans in the morning rounds was a strong outing by Michael La Sasso and Jase Summy, knocking off Cameron Adams and Dominic Clemons 4 and 2.
But the afternoon saw a reversal of fortune for both sides. Koivun dropped Waver 4 and 3 in individual play. Stout outshot Forster 6 and 5 and Hagestad overwhelmed Gavin Tiernan 7-5.
In all, the U.S. took five of the eight singles rounds, with one draw.
Play resumes in the 50th Walker Cup on Sunday at Cypress Point.
