Erik Chalhoub here, listening to the horns from the Weekly’s Seaside office.

For a few weeks, until recently, southbound Fremont Boulevard narrowed to one lane, with cones set up right in front of the driveway our office shares with the neighboring Taqueria Zarape. Warning signs at least a mile in advance advised drivers of the lane reduction, but of course, drivers waited until the last second to merge into the left lane.

Hence, the horns. And screeching. Even an expletive or four.

The busy intersection of Fremont Boulevard and Canyon Del Rey, near the borders of Monterey, Seaside and Del Rey Oaks, has been undergoing a transformation in recent months as the first section of the Fort Ord Regional Trail and Greenway (FORTAG) is constructed.

In this week’s edition of the Weekly, Staff Writer Aric Sleeper provides an update on the long-in-the-works project, and the frustration that comes with it.

The project, once completed, will provide a much-needed route for pedestrians and bicyclists through a vehicle-heavy corridor.

But beyond the temporary traffic issues, officials have expressed concerns over the quality of the construction. The project has even become a campaign issue for those running for Del Rey Oaks City Council, as Senior Staff Writer Pam Marino reports.

Check out Sleeper’s story for the latest on FORTAG. Oh, and be patient when you’re traveling through the area.
