A 43-year-old man was shot and killed in the Northside of Salinas Thursday night after police got a call about a gunshot victim lying in the street, Salinas police reported.
At 11:30pm ShotSpotter was activated near the intersection of Massa Street and North Main Street. A call came soon after saying there was a man lying in the street in the 2100 block of North Main.
Officers found the man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and provided first aid until medical personnel arrived. He was declared dead at the scene.
On Saturday Salinas Police identified the victims as Jess Carl Gonzales of Salinas. Police called him a "known gang member."
Gonzales was walking from the Shop N Save store, 2143 N. Main St., when he was shot, police reported. Stray bullets also struck the store, but no one else was injured.
The suspect was described as a male dressed in dark clothing. He was last seen running northbound on North Main Street.
Based on the information the police have so far it is being investigated as gang related, although an exact motive is not yet known, according to the police statement.
This is Salinas' 12th homicide of 2017.
