An incarcerated man at Monterey County Jail died over the weekend, allegedly from an assault. 

According to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, on Sunday, March 29, around 10am, correctional deputies at the jail discovered 30-year-old Abraham Camacho of Hayward unconscious in his unit at the jail while they were conducting a safety check. 

Deputies and jail medical staff immediately initiated life-saving measures with the prisoner, who paramedics also treated after they arrived at the jail, but the man succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene. 

On March 30, the Sheriff's Office announced that 21-year-old Romeo Tejada Gonzales of Greenfield, 19-year-old Marwuy Jose Centeno Camacho of Soledad and 20-year-old Elijah Herrera of Salinas were charged in connection with the death. Each is being charged with murder, gang conspiracy and criminal street gang enhancements.

According to a statement, Tejada-Gonzales was already incarcerated for firearms-related charges, Camacho was in custody for multiple warrants, including one for murder and Herrera was in custody for robbery and firearm charges.

Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office are continuing to investigate the incident. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Unit will be assisting in the investigation and will conduct the post-mortem forensic examination to determine the cause of the victim’s death.
