A teenager is in custody following a shooting on Friday, Dec. 19 near a shopping center in Marina.
At about 4:20pm on Friday, Dec. 19, Marina Police responded to a report of shots fired on the 300 block of Ninth Street, an area near the University Village Apartments behind the Dunes shopping center.
A stray bullet grazed a male bystander standing on the sidewalk, according to Detective Sgt. Chris Johnson of the Marina Police Department. The suspect fled toward an apartment complex near the 200 block of Second Avenue and Horizon Drive, where police ordered a shelter-in-place.
After about three hours, officers located the suspect, a juvenile male, and took him into custody, police say. He was later booked into Monterey County Juvenile Hall.
“We know there was a target,” Johnson says, adding that the bystander was not the intended victim. The bystander did not suffer serious injuries, and no other injuries were reported.
Formally, the shopping center is known as The Dunes on Monterey Bay, which includes big-box retailers, grocery stores and entertainment venues. The shots were reported behind the portion of the shopping center that includes Trader Joe’s and the Cinemark Century Marina.
Police have not released a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
