Over the past week, the Solidarity Network in Monterey County, a volunteer-led organization of legal observers who monitor immigration enforcement activities in the county, has reported two targeted Immigration and Customs Enforcement detentions. It also warns targeted detention in the region is on the rise.
The latest detention happened at night on Friday, July 17 at the Monterey Regional Airport when a person attempted to board a domestic flight.
“The person was detained by a man wearing all black without any police identification,” the Solidarity Network stated in its report.
The Solidarity Network advises people with precarious immigration status, including those who lack a permanent or guaranteed residency, to take precautionary measures including abstaining from taking domestic and international fights.
Three days prior to the ICE detention at the airport, a Salinas man was detained at his home in Salinas in the early morning of Wednesday, July 15, according to the Rapid Response Network.
The Solidarity Network last reported a targeted detention in April when a man was detained in Seaside at the intersection of Sonoma Avenue and Judson Street when he was on his way to take his daughter to daycare.
