The Naval Postgraduate School is now home to a powerful supercomputer powered by artificial intelligence, the first NVIDIA DGX GB300 computer in use by the U.S. military. It's expected to dramatically increase the school's computational capabilities for research and other projects, according to a press release.

The supercomputer was launched in a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, July 22, attended by NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command Adm. Samuel J. Paparo, NPS President and retired vice admiral Ann Rondeau, as well as faculty, students and other military leaders.

The DGX GB300 system supports ongoing collaborative AI research established under an agreement between NPS and NVIDIA announced in December 2024.

It will help train students to use AI for solving operational challenges such as weather modeling, oceanic and operations research, cybersecurity, disaster resilience and response planning.

“AI will be a backbone of America’s defense,” Huang said. “By supporting the Naval Postgraduate School and placing one of the world’s most advanced AI supercomputers in the hands of the men and women who defend our nation, we are empowering them to train on it, build with it, and lead America’s fighting force with the decisive advantages our Sailors, Marines and Joint Force deserve.”

The supercomputer was donated to the NPS Foundation by NVIDIA, which installed it at NPS. The company also donated funding for research projects that require the DBX GB300's high compute and memory capacity.
