The longest-serving member in the the history of the Carmel Police Department plans to retire at the end of the year.
Chief Mike Calhoun announced this week his 32-year tenure with the city will be coming to a close.
"I am so blessed to have worked my entire law enforcement career with such a great organization, outstanding staff and wonderful people in the community," the 55-year-old Calhoun said in a prepared statement.
The city of Carmel is already facing 12 vacancies within city government.
Hiring new employees is one of the top priorities in the city right now, says City Administrator Chip Rerig, who took over the city's top job in in February.
Vacant positions within the city include: two land-use planners, one police officer and a code enforcement officer among others, Rerig continues.
A search for Calhoun's replacement will begin later this year.
The city's top cop first joined the police force in 1984 and rose through the ranks to chief of police and director of public safety in 2012.
He's retiring at an annual salary of $170,226.20.
