The Seaside City Council will hold a special meeting tonight at 5pm, Feb. 6, to appoint a new city manager, Greg McDanel, who the City Council selected out of a pool of 37 applicants. The city has been without a permanent city manager since April 18, following the leave and ultimate termination of former city manager Jaime Fontes.

McDanel, since 2012, has been the city manager of Maryville, Missouri, a city with a population of about 10,300 and also the home of Northwest Missouri State University. He will leave as the longest-tenured manager of the city, and brings over 20 years of local government experience.

In a statement the City of Seaside put out this morning, McDanel said, “I am truly honored by the opportunity to serve as Seaside’s next city manager…Seaside is a dynamic and diverse community with a strong foundation of progress, and I look forward to working alongside the city’s dedicated staff, elected officials and engaged residents.”

McDanel’s starting salary will be $285,000, and his first day will be March 17.

Meanwhile, Interim City Manager Craig Malin’s last day will be today, when he’ll hit his limit in allowable hours under his contract, so the City Council will also be appointing a new interim city manager tonight, Assistant City Manager Dan Meewis, who long led the city’s Recreation Department.

The council will convene in closed session at the beginning of the meeting, and will come out to approve resolutions naming both McDanel and Meewis to their positions.
