“We want to get started today,” says an eager Sarah Orr.
But a little patience will be required before the owner of the upscale Stokes Adobe in downtown Monterey can branch out—and take a few steps down the price point ladder. After all, Orr only learned on Thursday that the Pacific Grove City Council had awarded her the lease for the snack shack at Lovers Point.
Snack Shack at Lovers Point is actually the name Orr is going with for the moment. Over the past few weeks, as the council mulled over proposals—some 30 people and entities had expressed interest in the space—Orr and her husband have spent time observing foot traffic around the little dining spot.
“There’s a neat opportunity to do something fun and creative,” she explains. “We’re really excited about it.”
Orr foresees a manageable menu that is casual and affordable, yet still of the quality one would expect from a fine dining restaurateur. She admits that many owners of upscale kitchens might not stoop to a beachside shack. But the location allows her and her team to explore more laid-back options.
“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” she points out.
The former Grill at Lovers Point has been shuttered since the end of February after the previous owner’s lease expired. The city had originally hoped to award a new contract in May.
Before the Snack Shack can open, Orr and the city must iron out final lease details. Rent is based on a percentage of gross income, with a base amount paid to the city each month. There are also inspections to be completed.
And at just 300 square feet, there are limits imposed by the building itself.
“There’s the vision and there’s the reality of what the space will allow,” Orr says. “By next week I’ll know more what timing looks like.”
